Contemporary Short Story “Three Little Pigs”

1. Introduction
Contemporary
literature is literature with its setting generally after world war II. The literature
usually not follow the element of literarure. Short story is one of a literary
work. Literary work, there are prose, poetry, and drama.
Short
story is an invented prose narrative shorter than a novel usually dealing with
a few characters and aiming at unity of effect and often concentrating on the
creation of mood rather than plot. Three Little Pigs by Leonard Leslie Brooke
is a contemporary literature.
The
short story tells about three pigs that go out from her mother’s house and find
a fortune. Three little pigs build a home, the first pig build home by bundle,
the second pig build home by wood, and the third pig build home by brick. The
wolf come in every home of pigs and he want to eat the pigs but every pigs can
escape from catched the wolf. Finally the wolf die and three little pigs life
happily ever after.
The
researcher want to analysis contemporary literature in short story “Three
Little Pigs” by Leonard Leslie Brooke to know the kind and intrinsic elements
of the short story. Researcher use theory of Aminuddin on the book “Pengantar Apresiasi Karya Sastra” to
analysis intrinsic elements of short story.

Analysis
2.1.
Intrinsic Elements
According the theory of Aminuddin, the
researcher will analysis intrinsic elements of the short story “Three Little
Pigs” by Leonard Leslie Brooke.
a. Character
and characterization

Brownie, is the third pig, he is main
character because he always found in first until ending the story. Brownie is a
complex character because he has a problem. Characterization of the Brownie is
smart, brave and diligent because he can beat the wolf with his smart tactic.
“Well,
do you know, that smart little pig got up at five o’clock and went out and got
the turnips and was back home before the wolf came at six o’clock.”
“Yes,
indeed,” replied Brownie. “Here, I will throw one down to you.” And he threw
the apple so far that while the wolf was running to pick it up, the little pig
jumped down from the tree and ran home.”

Whitey, is the first pig, he is a
supporter character. Characterization of Whitey is coward because he can not
beat the wolf and he go away to his home in the forest.
“This made the wolf
angry, and he said:
Then I’ll puff and I’ll huff, and I’ll blow your house in”.
So he puffed and he huffed and he blew the house in. And he carried poor little Whitey away to his home in the forest.”

Brownie hustled and bustled around, and went the next morning at four o’clock
to the apple orchard.”
“But Brownie went off to the fair at one o’clock and bought a great big copper kettle.”

“Presently
a wolf came along and knocked at the door of Whitey’s house.”

“He had just finished his house when the wolf came along.”

turned and ran back home without going to the fair.”

“Poor
little Brownie. He didn’t know what to do. And then suddenly he jumped into the
copper kettle and gave himself a push. And the kettle went rolling over and
over, with the little pig in it.”
c. Plot

Exposition
There was mother of three pigs lived in
the forest. She ask her children to go out from her home and find their
fortune. The three pigs build their home. First pig named Whitey build his home
with bundle, second pig named Blackey build his home with wood, and third pig
named Brownie build home with brick.
“Once
upon a time there was and old pig with three little pigs, and one day she said
to them: “My children, it is time for you to go out in the world and seek your
fortunes”.
So, bidding their mother good-bye, the three little pigs set out to earn their living.”

first little pig, whose name was Whitey, met a man with a bundle of straw and
said to him: “Please, mister, will you give me that straw to build a house

Confix
The wolf come to the home in three pigs
then puff and huff home of three pig. Whitey’s home and Blackey’s home blew
because the wolf puff and huff their home but Brownie’s home can not destroy.

“Little pig, little pig,” he said. “Let me come in.”
But of course Whitey didn’t want the wolf to come in, so he said:
“No, no, by the hair on my chinny-chin-chin!”
This made the wolf angry, and he said:

Climax
The
wolf very angry because he cannot bew Brownie’s home and he uses many strategy
to eat the pig.
So he said: “Little
pig, I know where there is a nice field of turnips.”
“Where?” asked Brownie.
“Over in Mr. Smith’s field. If you will be ready tomorrow morning, I will call for you and we will go together and get some for dinner.”
“Very well,” answered Brownie. “I will be ready. What time do you want to go?”
“Around six o’clock,” answered the wolf.
“Where?” asked Brownie.
“Over in Mr. Smith’s field. If you will be ready tomorrow morning, I will call for you and we will go together and get some for dinner.”

“he was very angry, and

“Down at Merry Garden,” replied the wolf. “I will go with you tomorrow morning at five o’clock and we will get some apples.”

“Now the wolf was very,
very angry, and he thought and thought and finally thought of a plan to catch
the little pig.
Coming to his house the next morning, he said, “Little pig, there is a fair in town this afternoon. Will you go?”
“Oh, yes,” replied Brownie. “I will be very glad to go. What time will you want me to be ready?”
“At three o’clock,” said the wolf.”

Poor little Brownie. He
didn’t know what to do. And then suddenly he jumped into the copper kettle and

pig in it.

Falling action
Brownie can beat the wolf with smart
strategy. He always come before the time that he said to the wolf so he can
come in his home before the wolf come.
“Well, do you know,
that smart little pig got up at five o’clock and went out and got the turnips
and was back home before the wolf came at six o’clock.”
“But Brownie hustled

This time he had farther to go and had to climb the tree, so that just as he was getting down with the apples in a basket, he saw the wolf coming. Of course he was frightened.”

Resolution
Brownie can beat the wolf and finally
the wolf death. Brownie rescue his brother in the forest. Finally they lived
happily ever after in Brownie’s home.
“This made the wolf so
very angry that he jumped up on to the roof of the little pig’s house and
started to climb down the chimney.
When Brownie saw this he made a blazing fire in the fireplace and hung the copper kettle over it full of scalding water. And just as the wolf came down the chimney, the little pig pulled off the cover of the kettle and plop! Into the scalding water fell the wolf.”
“So Brownie boiled the
wolf, and then went out and rescued his two brothers, Whitey and Blackey, from
the forest where the wolf had been keeping them.
And they all lived happily together in the little brick house forever afterwards”.

d. Point
of view
Point of view of the short story “Three
Little Pigs” by Leonard Leslie Brooke is third person because in the short
story use “he” to tell the character in the story.

e. Theme
Theme of the short story “Three Little
Pigs” is smart and dilligent can make someone to be success.
f. Style
Style in the short story “Three Little
Pigs” was not found because this story is to children so the story use simple
language so that easy to understand by children.
2.2.
Contemporary
a. Character
The character is contemporer because the
character is animals, and the animals can speak like a man. The animals in the
story can build home like a man. The pigs can climb a true, in the fact pigs
cannot climb. The wolf can huff, puff, and blow home until broken. The short
story a man can speak with animals and in short story “Three Little Pigs” man
not main character but supporting character. So the short story “Three Little
Pigs” is include contemporary literature.
b. Setting
Setting the short story “Three Little
Pigs” is same with elements of literature and follow the rule of intrinsic
element.
c. Plot
Plot the short story is same with
element in other literature and follow the rule.
3.
Conclusion
Short
story “Three Little Pigs” by Leonard Leslie Brooke is a contemporer literary
work because any element that not follow the rule of literature. The character
of the story is animals and man to be supporting character. Setting and plot
followed the structure of element of literature. Point of view the story is
third person. The researcher not found the style in the story because the story
for the children so the writter use a simpe word so that easy to understand for
children.
