“I determined to watch his movements. I usually took the master’s side rather than Catherine’s because he was kind and trusting and honourable. She was not exactly dishonest, but I had little faith in her, and still less sympathy for her feelings. I wanted something to happen which might free both Wuthering Heights and the Grange from Heathcliff’s influence, leaving us as we had been, before he had come back. His visits were like a bad dream to me, and, I suspected, to my master as well. I hated him living at Wuthering Heights, but I could not explain why. I felt that an evil beast was walking between the Heights and the Grange, waiting for the right time to jump upon us and destroy us.”(page 39)
